What Diabetics Need to Know About Their Doctor

Beating Diabetes Without Meds
All diabetics stand helplessly by, watching their condition progress. The progression is slow; almost unnoticed. But, never-the-less, it is progressing, very quietly, day-by-day. But, guess what? It doesn't need to be that way. I was diagnosed fifteen years ago. Initially, I was on a single oral medication. Fifteen years later it had progressed to 6 oral medications and insulin injections twice each day. When I think back on it, it all happened so casually that the extent (impact) of change never really hit me. After all, we have been conditioned to accept that diabetes will progress. That is, until I was put on injections. A year ago, my doctor informed me that he was out of tricks. There were no more oral medications available. I was maxed-out on the available pharmaceutical options. I was devastated!
What's next? Just keep increasing the amounts of insulin? That can't be good! How far can that go? Everything I have read says that insulin injections will lead to heart disease and worse. That is a horrible option! There must be some other option. I was determined to find an answer. After all, ten years ago I was told that I had the beginnings of a cataract, and I beat that.
My ophthalmologist told me I had the beginning of a cataract. A type that would progress to a point of needing surgery within six months. I could not allow that to happen. I immediately read everything I could find about the subject. Dr. Atkins, author of the famed Atkins Low Carbohydrate Diet, spoke frequently in his books about stopping and reversing diseases; including diabetes, cataracts, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis...even cancer in his clinic. That started me on a search that eventually led to Alpha Lipoic Acid, Lutein and vitamin A. I started immediately taking all three, along with some others for good measure. All vitamins and minerals must be accompanied by other substances in order to function. To my surprise, and especially my ophthalmologist's, there were no signs of progression three months later. Ten years later there are still no traces of progression and my vision has actually improved. The same ophthalmologist that previously claimed that supplements are "witchcraft"...is now selling the stuff in his office!
Needless to say, being told that I was reaching the end of treatment options, fueled my determination to solve this one also. Obviously, there are things out there that our doctors do not know much about. And sure enough, Dr Atkins said it in one of his books; that we should not be fooled. Doctors are trained in pharmaceuticals. If they cannot control a condition with drugs, they do not know what to do? Can that be possible? The answer is, as it turned out, a resounding YES! Once again, I was off to a new challenge.
I have spent an exhausting year, researching everything I could find on diabetes. Thanks to the miracle of the Internet, I have uncovered amazing things. For example, diabetics are universally (chronically) deficient in five vital vitamins and minerals. Two of which, are instrumental in allowing our body's cells to absorb and utilize insulin. Diabetes is an inflammatory disease, so immune disorders caused by poor diet and years of medication damage exist. Also, a serious absorption deficit is common in diabetics. We don't get the proper nutrition from our food, and cannot absorb their nutrients because of other ways we have, unknowingly, abused our body. And, as I confirmed by asking my doctor, doctors do not have a clue about nutrition. My internal medicine specialist, admitted that he is not trained in nutrition, and does not practice it. Also, he didn't think that labs could test for deficiencies, and it probably would be expensive. Labs can test for deficiencies; it is not expensive; and insurance covers it. The good news is, there are doctors (alternative medicine, and holistic medicine) that can prescribe lab blood panels, interpret the results, and help you reverse your diabetes.
I have progressed from six oral medications, and injections, to one oral medication and injections in six months. My weight, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, and A1c readings have reached normal, or near normal levels- without drugs. And, I am still working on it. My doctor believes that I could be drug free, and PROGRESSION FREE (diabetic related damage), within one year. I feel the best I have felt in 20 years.
